The Turner Prize: But is it Art?

  • Helmsely Arts Centre The Old Meeting House YO62 5DW United Kingdom (map)

Elizabeth Strang has worked as a guide at both Tate Modern and Tate Britain, lectured on cruises and specialises in twentieth-century art. This lecture will look at the aims and history of the Turner Prize since its beginning in 1984 and of course at its 2017 venue in Hull. We are reminded of some of the entries that were judged outrageous and eccentric by the media and more pertinently look at four winners - a potter (Grayson Perry), a painter (Peter Doig), a sculptor (Antony Gormley) and an installation artist (Rachel Whiteread) - to see if the subsequent work has justified the earlier accolade.
